What is Oil Pulling?
Coconut oil pulling is the act of using coconut oil to pull toxins and bacteria from your mouth. It is an ancient practice that involves swishing oil in your mouth to remove bacteria and promote oral hygiene. It is often associated with Auyrveda, the traditional medicine system from India.
Studies suggest that oil pulling can kill bacteria in the mouth and improve dental health. Some alternative medicine practitioners also claim that it can help treat several diseases. (Healthline)
How to do it?
Using organic coconut oil, take a tablespoon of and put it in your mouth. Allow the coconut oil to melt down. As it liquifies, swish the oil around in the mouth as you would mouthwash.
Swish around for a minimum of 10min, for best results swish for at least 20 mins. DO NOT SWALLOW any amounts of the oil, as it has tons of bacteria and toxins that you do not want to ingest. Spit out the coconut oil and then brush your teeth.
Do this first thing in the morning, as your mouth is full of bacteria when you wake up.
What benefits do I receive?
Coconut oil pulling removes harmful bacteria in the mouth. According to Healthline, Streptococcus mutans is one of the main bacteria in your mouth and a key player in plaque buildup and tooth decay.
One study in 60 adults showed that oil pulling with coconut oil for 10 minutes every day significantly reduced the number of S. mutans in saliva in as little as two weeks, compared to distilled water.
Another study in children concluded that coconut oil was as effective as a standard chlorhexidine mouthwash at reducing S. mutans.
While these results are promising, more studies are needed comparing the effectiveness of coconut oil to other types of oils.
Oil pulling reduces bad breath, by reducing the amount of bacteria and toxins in your mouth which in turn gives you a cleaner mouth hence fresher breath.
Coconut oil pulling as also been known to whiten teeth, although this is scientifically not been proven, I would recommend taking before and after photos about 90 days apart.
Lastly, because coconut oil removes toxins and bacteria, it stops them from getting into the body which then causes an amazing effect on the skin.
People who oil pull tend to have clearer, blemish free skin. As oil-pulling cuts toxins out from the source, it helps clear the skin of impurities which can cause acne, dullness and rashes.
There is no scientific evidence that approves these claims however, it is suggested to take before and after photos to see if you benefit from the regimen.
